Silicon Valley Alumni Club Meeting Minutes
August 18, 1998

Present: Vince Contreras, Mark Sanchez, Jeff Zell, Mickey Hsieh, Jeff Kuch, Siatuu Lavatai, John Paine, Howard Feiner, Jeff Rosen, Tim Burke

Reading of Minutes were waived

I. Reports

  1. Historian - Kuch
    • Moved all the paddles from Fra A. Mast to J. Paine's house. Thanked John for storing them.
    • Found the filing cabinet. It is with Fra Williams (Lumpy). Trying to get it from him.
    • Need to get some of the information stored in the filing cabinet to Berkeley for their initiation.
    • Can't find the robes.
    • If there is anything that needs to be found, contact Fra Kuch.
    • Went through a list of pledge classes that are missing paddles.
  2. Social - Zell (for Hilton)
    • B-B-Q on August 29th at Fra Paine's house. Starts at 4:00pm. Fra Hilton will bring the drinks and Fra Paine will have Hamburgers and Hot Dogs available. Members are encouraged to bring a side. Fra M. Hsieh will make a flyer for the rushees that are invited. All family members are invited.
    • Fra M. Hsieh's party has been moved back to Saturday, September 5th Will start at 4:00 p.m.
    • Fra Zell will contact either Fra Yeoumans, Makiewicz or Burnside to help set up for Spartan tailgates. We have reserved a spot on the East Field for every game that can hold up to 50 people. First home game will be on Sept. 12th against Washington State.
  3. Convention - Contreras and Paine
    • Fra Contreras and Fra Paine returned from the National Convention last week. Thought it was a better than previous years. Had approx. 160 undergrads.
    • Had an outstanding program on such subjects as: recruitment, risk management, and alcohol free house. (the chapters were against an alcohol free house program and National agree that it will only use it as a sanction.)
    • Beta Delta was not represented at the convention
    • The Octagon has placed the charter for Beta Delta in the control of the Alumni Club.
    • The Alumni Club can either try to start up the chapter or National can pull the charter within a year and put Beta Delta in a 3 year program to re-colonize at that time.
    • San Jose State University will include us in formal rush for this semester.
    • The National convention for next year will be August 11-15, 1999 in Los Angeles. It will be our 90th anniversary so the Octagon will give out $90K in scholarships to celebrate.
  4. Recorder - Hsieh
    • Passed out a rough draft of the letter to be mailed out to all Beta Deltas and all Sammies in the Bay Area letting them know about the Alumni Club.
    • Will take excerpts of that letter and submit it to be published in the Octagonian.
  5. Exchequer - Barko (not present
    • Fra T. Burke presented the chapter with a check for $500 from the City of San Jose for their fund raiser by helping to clean up San Jose. Gave special acknowledgement to: T. Sheridan, V. McFadden, I. Bryant, B. Rogers, M. Davis, J. Courtney and T. Burke for all their hard work.

II. Old Business
  1. Fra M. Snow's initiation will be postponed. We will set a date after we get all the paperwork we need from him and send it off to National.
  2. M. Sanchez will get a copy of the zip code book so we can send out the letter to members about the alumni club.
  3. Fra Contreras suggested that we publish the member directory annually.
III. New Business:
  1. Under the constitution of the Alumni Club, we need to fill other chairmenships:
    • Historian - Jeff Kuch
    • Parliamentarian - Howard Feiner
    • Sgt-At-Arms - Siatuu Lavatai
    • Social - Chris Hilton
    • Election Committee - Vince Contreras
    • Rush - Open
IV. Announcements:
  1. Hold on to your seats...Beta Delta received the following awards from IFC:
    • Most Improved Initiated Member - GPA 2.9
    • The Highest Initiated Member - GPA 2.9
    • The Highest Chapter Average - GPA 2.9
    • Most Improved Chapter Average - GPA 2.9
  2. Fra M. Hsieh's party has been moved to Sept. 5th.
  3. Sigma-Sigma will hold their initiation on August 24th. Their address is 2714 Durant Avenue.
