Silicon Valley Alumni Club Meeting Minutes
April 15, 2003

Meeting called to Order at 7:40pm by John Paine, Prior.

Reading of previous Minutes were waived.

Present: Tim Burke, Jim Paine, Mike Barko, Rick Ferber, Jeff Zell, Dr. Vince Contreras, and Siatuu (STU) Lavatai.

I. Old Business:

  1. Brotherhood Quarterly Social (March 2003)
    1. Thank you to the seven (7) brothers who attended the East Bay Brotherhood Quarterly Social.
    2. The next Quarterly Social will be held in the South Bay, in June. Continue to monitor your emails for exact location and details.
  2. SVACoSAM Golf Tourney Scramble
    1. The Alumni golf tournament originally scheduled, for May 2003, to be held at the Moffett Field Golf Course (Mountain View) has been postponed due to renovations.
    2. If there are any alumni who may know of an alternate site that will accommodate our golfing event, then, please send your suggestions to Prior John Paine via his Email: (japaine1@aol.com).
    3. If the Golf Tournament is NOT held in the spring, then, you will have to wait until fall.
  3. Beta Delta 40th Anniversary Reunion/SVACoSAM Social
    1. An invitation letter for the Beta Delta 40th Reunion/SVAC Brotherhood Social (drafted by Prior John Paine) has been mailed to local SAMMY alumni. If you haven't received your invitation to the Reunion, then, please contact Prior Paine via his Email: japaine@aol.com.
    2. The following is a summary of this event's details:
      1. Event Day/Date: Friday (04/25/2003)
        1. Oakland A's Baseball (A's versus Cleveland Indians) at Oakland Coliseum. First pitch at 7:05pm. Cost: $8.00 per ticket (Upper Reserve).
        2. If you would like to attend, then, contact Fra Bob Javinsky, via his Email: rmjavinsky@hotmail.com OR you can send your monies to his residence, (162 Hackamore Lane, Fremont, CA 94539). His home phone (510-659-0804), Cell (650-793-1036).
      2. Event Day/Date: Saturday (04/26/2003)
        1. Alumni and Family BBQ and Picnic at Kelly Park from 10am to 4pm.
        2. Brotherhood Dinner Banquet Registration and Cocktails (CROWNE PLAZA HOTEL, Downtown San Jose) from 7pm to 8pm.
        3. Brotherhood Dinner Banquet begins at 8pm.
        4. Following dinner, there may be some speeches by "distinguished fratres" and music (from contracted disc jockey) and dancing.
        5. The Dinner Banquet and dance cost is ($65.00 per person). Banquet tables of ten (10) can be RESERVED in advance. If you choose this group of ten table option, then please enclose a check for ($650.00) with the list of names of those alumni you want seated at "your group of ten table."
        6. All other seating will be "OPEN seating," meaning those alumni who do not choose the "group of ten table option," will have to fill in other vacant seats (on a first come, first serve basis).
        7. Currently, we have fifty-three (53) guests CONFIRMED for this event. So, sign up and send in your monies, today!         8. NOTE: The CONFIRMED venue location for the Beta Delta 40th Reunion/SVAC social event will be the Crowne Plaza Hotel, downtown San Jose (282 Almaden Boulevard, San Jose, CA 95113). For directions or other information, please call the hotel at (408-998-0400).
        9. We are still looking for any alumnus who would be willing to assist in this event and other activities during (Saturday, April 26th). If you want to help out at one of the Brotherhood events or both, then please contact: Prior John Paine, via his Email: (japaine1@aol.com).
  4. Executive Council sworn-in
    1. All newly elected members of the SVACoSAM Executive Council:
      (Prior John Paine, Vice Prior Tim Burke, Exchequer Jeff Zell and Recorder Jim Paine) were sworn into office.

    1. Still Posting SAMMY Emails to the SAMMY directory.
    2. We currently have 146 members on the SVACoSAM Yahoo website. Here's the URL: 
      (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/siliconvalleysammies). So, if you haven't officially registered on Yahoo, then what are you waiting for. Register for your own Yahoo account, now!
  2. Exchequer
    1. SVACoSAM Bank Account Grand Total: ($3,759.47). Reunion postage costs and other miscellaneous fees, for Prior Paine, totalled: ($461.02) and November 2002 Golf Tournament fees, for Prior Paine,
      totalled: ($602.50).

  5. Octagon Counsel
    1. National's Annual Insurance fees continue to rise every year because fraternities are considered high risk management organizations. 
    2. National HQ is currently looking for a National Expanding Consultant to assist with recruiting and expanding or
      recolonizing SAMMY chapters.
    3. The Octagon will meet at Ceasar's Palace (Las Vegas, Nevada) during the weekend of (4/19 to 4/20/2003). If you are interested in attending then, please contact Dr. Vince Contreras, via his Email: DrWho@worldnet.att.net.

IV. Announcements:

  1. Fra Jeff Zell (SVAC Exchequer) completed house renovations on the second story of his home. He will be moving back to his "NEW home" soon.
  2. Fra Jonas Vogelhut (Psi Chapter- Univ. of Pittsburgh) is currently a U.S. Army Major, serving in the Persian Gulf. He is doing well and continuing with his unit's mission.
  3. Fra Tim Burke (SVAC Vice Prior) announced that San Jose State University School of Journalism Professor (Fra Harvey Gotlief, Wayne State University) will be retiring soon.
  4. Annual Appeal
    1. Don't forget to support the Brotherhood, with your monetary donation. We accept donations all year-round. Your donations go a long way, to decrease our Club's expenses. If you have any questions, then, please contact Prior John Paine, via his Email: (japaine1@aol.com).
