Silicon Valley Alumni Club Meeting Minutes
April 16, 2002

Meeting called to Order at 7:50pm by Fra Mike Barko, Prior.

Reading of previous Minutes were waived.

Mike Kennemer (Gamma Theta- Univ. California at Davis), Joel Odelson (Gamma Nu- San Diego State Univ.), Leonard Salle (Mu Kappa- Wayne State Univ), Lloyd Gordon (Mu Gamma- Case Western Reserve), Keith Barna (Mu Theta- Univ. of Southern California), John Paine (Beta Delta-San Jose State Univ.), Mike Barko (Beta Delta), Jeff Zell (Beta Delta), Jeff Kuch (Beta Delta), Rick Bartlocelli (Beta Delta), Eric Graber (Beta Delta), and Siatuu (STU) Lavatai (Beta Delta).

I. Old Business:

  1. Golf Scramble Tourney (as per Fra John Paine)
    1. The Spring 2002 Golf Tournament is scheduled for Sunday (04/28/2002) at the Moffett Field Golf Course. Event cost: ($45.00). Fees pay for food & drinks, prizes, use of golf course and golf cart. Golf clubs can be rented on site. If you have questions contact the golf hosts via Email: Vince Contreras (DrWho@worldnet.att.net) or John Paine (japaine1@aol.com).
      1. We need (28 golfers) in order to reserve the golf course. We invite ALL SAMMIES, family and friends to attend. Presently, seventeen (17) golfers have paid. So, we need eleven (11) more people to meet our quota.
      2. We encourage all amateur and interested golfers to attend.
      3. This event has been opened to all SAMMY, their family and friends. So, if you know anyone who wants to play, please inform them of our event.
      4. If we are unable to CONFIRM twenty-eight (28) golfers, for this event, then this event may be cancelled OR relocated to another venue. Fra Paine has until Friday (April 19, 2002) to decide if he will cancel or relocate this event. Please continue to monitor your Emails for updated information regarding this event.
  2. Cyber Groups (as per Fra John Paine)
    1. John Paine and Fra Jeff Zell designed a SAMMY website on Yahoo Groups. You are invited to POST and READ messages from other brothers throughout the world. (URL: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/siliconvalleysammies)
      1. Read about current alumni news, the referral network, job vacancies, upcoming brotherhood and social events and much more.
      2. If you have any questions about the NEW website, please send all questions to the Group Moderators, via Email, John Paine (japaine1@aol.com) OR Jeff Zell (jeff@asinine.com).
  3. Brotherhood & Social Events:
    1. Upcoming Brotherhood & Social Events are the following:
      1. Gamma Theta- Picnic Day (for all Active and Alumni Brothers) schedule for Saturday, (April 20, 2002) to be held at the Chapter House- 101 Russell Street in the town of Davis.
      2. Directions to the Chapter House at 101 Russell are:
        Take hwy 80 to Davis, take hwy 113 to Russell, make right and go 2-3 miles to 101 Russell. For more information contact Nik Huerta (909) 660-7143 or by email: njhuerta@ucdavis.edu.
    2. Fra Jeff Kuch will check on the San Jose Giants home schedule and report his findings at a future SVACoSAM meeting.
    3. Fra Keith Barna will check if we can hold our annual SAMMY summer BBQ and pool party at a local swimming pool. He will report his findings at a future SVACoSAM meeting.
    4. Sigma Sigma Chapter (UC Berkeley) is hosting "Otter Pops Party" at the chapter house: 2714 Durant Street in Berkeley. Event starts at 9pm. If you have any questions contact Rick, via his Email at, (rick_bart@hotmail.com).
  4. DONATIONS: We collect donations all year round.
    1. All alumni are encouraged to donate to SVACoSAM, since we do not require membership dues. Donations support our administrative, mailing and other alumni club expenses.

II. Reports

  1. Recorder Report
    1. Still Posting SAMMY Emails to the SAMMY directory.
    2. All SVACoSAM nominees were elected and the proposed change to the SVACoSAM By Laws was approved.
      1. The proposed change affected the organizational structure of the Executive Board and Officers.
        1. The Proposed change is as follows: The Executive Board of the Association shall consist of the Prior, Vice Prior, Exchequer, Recorder, the immediate Past Prior, and four alumni members-at-large. The Prior, Vice-Prior, Exchequer, Recorder and four alumn members-at-large shall be the elected officials of the Association.
    3. The change in the Executive Board was made to reflect the Eight men Executive Board of Sigma Alpha Mu National Headquarters (aka. The Octagon).
  2. Exchequer Report ( per Jeff Kuch)
    1. The grand total of funds in the SVACoSAM bank account: $4,259.80, have NOT changed  drastically since last month.
  3. Vice Prior Report. (as per Fra John Paine)
    1. There are currently 183 members on the Silicon Valley SAMMIES website.
      1. Members have the option of receiving special notices regarding SVACoSAM.
  4. Prior Report (as per Fra Mike Barko)
    1. We, SVACoSAM, continue to receive responses from our alumni letter mailings. If you have any questions, please contact Fra Barko via Email (mbarko@corp.auspex.com).
    2. SVACoSAM has a PROFIT, in the amount of: ($300.00).
    3. Jerry Low (Regional Governor) announcement: SAMMY Nationals has authorized support for RUSH at University of Washington (Sigma Nu chapter) and San Jose State University (Beta Deltat Chapter). Details concerning these RUSH campaigns are pending the arrival of SAMMY National field representatives.
  5. Octagon Counsel (no report)
  6. Sigma Sigma (as per Fra Rick Bartlocelli, Co-Advisor at Sigma Sigma Chapter)
    1. Actives and Candidates
      1. Currently, there are twenty-three (23) actives and seven (7) candidates (aka. Pledges).
      2. The chapter house has twenty-one (21) tenants. They pay between ($325.00 to $550.00) per month for rent.
      3. Next week- (April 22nd to 26th) is Inspiration Week, at Sigma Sigma. If you want to visit the house during this period, please contact Rick Bartlocelli.
    2. The Stove
      1. The commercial stove has been installed and has been functioning for the past four months. The old stove was dismantled.
    3. The House
      1. The Sigma Sigma house is owned by SAMMY National Headquarters.
      2. SAMMY Nationals wants Sigma Sigma to form a housing committee OR housing corps to assume all property management duties, liabilities and responsibilities for their Chapter house.
      3. If there are any Sigma Sigma Alumni who would be interested in serving on the housing corps, then please contact Fra Rick Bartlocelli, via his Email: (rick_bart@hotmail.com).

IV. Announcements:

  1. SAMMY Convention 2002 is scheduled to be held (in Pittsburgh, PA) on August 9-11, 2002.
    1. Since SAMMY Regional Leadership Conferences will be held around the nation, the Octagon Counsel have decided to reduce the number of days, for the annual SAMMY Convention, to ONLY three days.
  2. If you are interested in attending a trip to Lake Pilsbury this summer (the weekend of August 2nd) then, contact Fra Jim Ketchum via Email:     (jim@ketchumfinancial.com).
