Silicon Valley Alumni Club Meeting Minutes
October 16, 2001

Meeting called to Order at 7:55pm by Fra Mike Barko, Prior.

Reading of previous Minutes were waived

Present: John Paine, Vince Contreras, Keith Barna and Siatuu (STU) Lavatai.

I. Old Business:

  1. Reestablishing of SAMMY Chapters
    1. SAMMY reestablishing efforts are focused at the following campuses: University of Washington (UW), Stanford University, University of Southern California (USC), and San Jose State University (SJSU).
      1. UW- Executive Director, Fra Aaron Girson will delay his trip to California to fly to University of Washington to help three matriculated students with RUSH and colonization efforts at Sigma Nu Chapter.
      2. Stanford- Fra Marco Castenada has talked with Aaron Girson concerning recolonizing. Details of that conversation will be organized into a formal letter and sent to the Octagon.
      3. Stanford Greek Life administrators want to be contacted by SAMMY National Representatives before seriously considering allowing SAMMY to colonize on campus.
      4. SJSU- Updates & details about SJSU RUSH will be tabled until next meeting, when Fra John Paine contacts Fra Mark Sanchez.
  2. SVAGoSAM data entry
    1. Fra John Paine is still working on entering SAMMY alumni Emails into the cybergroups directory. If there are any alumni who would like to assist with the data entry efforts, then please contact Fra Paine via Email: (japaine@aol.com).
  3. SVAGoSAM Logo Contest
    1. If there are any graphic artists out there in SAMMYLand who would like
      to design a SVAGoSAM logo, please contact the SVAGoSAM Recorder via Email:
      (sammystu@hotmail.com).
    2. Fra Mark Klein has designed a logo which was forwarded to Council members.
  4. Sigma Sigma
    1. UC Berkeley SAMMIES have contacted a local appliance retailer about purchasing a commercial stove for the SAMMY house. However, there have been problems with installation, because its too big to fit between the house doors.
      1. It was recommended that the stove be disassembled and then, reassembled inside the Sigma Sigma kitchen.
    2. Fall RUSH efforts has produced nine (9) pledge candidates, which is the largest class in three years.
    3. Discussions about hiring a House Chef is still being considered.
      1. However, there were issues with Risk Management and Liability. It was recommended that an independent contractor be hired for meal preparations.

II. Reports

  1. Recorder Report
    1. Still receiving Emails and updating SAMMY directory.
  2. Exchequer Report ( per Jeff Kuch)
    1. The Interest & grand total has NOT significantly changed since last month's report. We have approximately ($4236.00).
  3. Vice Prior Report. (as per Fra John Paine)
    1. Golf Tourney
      1. The golf tournament scheduled at NAS Moffet Field golf course was cancelled due to security restrictions at NAS Moffet Field.
      2. Fra Paine is looking for other golf courses to hold our second golf
        tournament. Other Bay Area golf courses were recommended.
    2. Beta Delta 40th Reunion
      1. Tabled until next meeting while Fra Paine contacts the reunion
        committee for updates.
  4. Prior Report.

III. New Business:

  1. RUSH Budget
    1. Further discussion to be suspended until Council receives more information and updates about Stanford RUSH events from Fra Marco Castenada.
  2. Currently, we are accepting Open-Nominations for next year's SVAGoSAM Council. If you know of any SAMMY alumni who would be interested in Council positions, then please contact me via Email: (sammystu@hotmail.com).

IV. Announcements:

  1. Sigma Sigma Events
    1. BBQ party at the SAMMY house (2718 Durant Avenue, Berkeley) before home football games.
      1. Nov 3rd- (12:30pm) Arizona
      2. Nov 10th-(12:30pm) Univ of Southern California
    2. Friday (Nov 16th)- BIG GAME Weekend. Meet at the SAMMY house at 6pm for 7:30pm dinner at a local restaurant. BIG GAME is at Stanford Stadium.
  2. Spartan Hockey (4 wins, 0 losses)
    1. Playing at the San Jose Ice Centre on Saturday, (Oct 20th) at 8:15pm.
  3. Fra Gerry Macabeo wedding at St. Victors Church on Saturday (Oct 20th) at Noon.
  4. Fra Keith Barna Christmas Party is scheduled for Saturday (Dec 1st). Monitor your Emails for start time.
  5. Regional Governor, Jerry Lowe, will be coming to visit Gamma Theta (UC Davis) and Sigma Sigma (UC Berkeley) in early November 2001.
